BC Day Holiday

Written on Friday, July 31st, 2015

Provinces and territories unite across the country to celebrate August long weekend by relishing in the day off.

The statutory holiday is recognized by all Canadian regions, except for Quebec and the Yukon. The two celebrate St. Jean Baptiste Day in June and Discovery Day in August, respectively. The holiday falls on the first Monday of every August, and due to a variety of provincial names for the celebration, it is often coined the 'August long weekend.'

Alberta uses the phrase Heritage Day, while Nova Scotia calls the August holiday Natal Day and Ontario refers to it as Emancipation Day. Residents of British Columbia, along with folks from Manitoba simply refer to the day by province name.

Did you know that 'The British Columbia Day Act, R.S.B.C. 1996 c.34 was first introduced in 1974 as Bill 61 by the Hon. Ernie Hall, the Provincial Secretary under Premier Dave Barrett?' The purpose of the Bill was to acknowledge BC's first pioneers. Forty-one years later and we're still enjoying the near national holiday.

Please note that all Dye & Durham search, filing and registry offices will be closed for the long weekend. We will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4.
