BC Justice Reform Initiative Final Report Released

At 288 pages, BC Justice Reform Initiative chair Geoffrey Cowper, QC's final report focuses on "on changes that will improve the operation of the system as a whole and enable us to better achieve the ends of criminal justice: safe communities and a fair and just system."

Titled "A Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century", the report includes extensive statistics, and recommendations in 11 specific areas, suggesting amendments to legislation, procedure, reporting, and overall reform. Five issues are addressed in particular: Domestic Violence, Administration of Justice Offences, Mental Health and Addiction, First Nations, and Restorative Justice. Includes as schedules are Cowper's interim reports, submissions from various stakeholders, and the BC Charge Assessment Review (authored by Gary McCuaig, QC).
