Law Society Seeking Feedback on Law Firm Regulation

Written on Friday, February 12th, 2016

Beginning next week, the Law Society of BC is touring the province seeking feedback from lawyers on a framework for regulating law firms.

The Law Firm Regulation Task Force will conduct focus groups in 10 cities (Nanaimo, Prince George, Vancouver, New Westminster, Surrey, Victoria, Kamloops, Cranbrook, Castlegar, Abbotsford, and Kelowna) over the coming weeks. There, they'll ask attendees for feedback on specific areas of concern, such as:

  • Conflict of interest
  • Accounting
  • Lawyer and firm succession plans
  • Marketing
  • Mentoring
  • Training and supervision
  • Client service complaints and client relations
  • File management
  • Privacy and confidentiality
  • Safe workplace and interpersonal relations
  • Crisis and personal assistance
  • Conduct and competence issues

This is Phase 2 of the LSBC's consultation; Phase 1 was a online survey that ran in November 2015, which more than 100 lawyers responded to. The results of that survey informed this second phase of the consultation.

The Task Force has emphasized that they want to receive feedback that represents the profession in the province: "from sole practitioners as well as members of larger firms, from lawyers at small firms in more remote or rural locations, from lawyers who do not work in the standard private practice environment, from lawyers who work for the Crown, and from lawyers who function as in-house counsel at a variety of different kinds of organizations."
