Written on Monday, June 22nd, 2015

Lawyer, judge and former provincial politician, Wally Oppal, Q.C. was freshly awarded the Douglas College Honorary Fellow award. The designation is held in high regard as the College's most respected decoration.

Oppal's career is vast and highlighted with a variety of achievements and social successes. He obtained his L.L.B. at UBC's Allard School of Law and was called to the Bar in 1967. Oppal has served as Attorney General of BC and as Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, in 2005 and 2009, respectively. His most prominent work was done for the betterment of policing practices, done on behalf of the missing and murdered women of downtown Vancouver's Eastside. Oppal fought for the forgotten, for the people without voices; he defended their rights, equality and justice. Oppal is one of BC's most celebrated advocates of social justice and community safety. His persistence and courageous spirit has lead to the improvement of the fair treatment of British Columbia's civilians.

Oppal now spends his time as Chancellor of Thompson Rivers University and at Boughton Law as the firm's Senior Counsel. His areas of expertise include alternative dispute resolution and commercial litigation.

Congratulations and thank for your community service, Wally!
